Alex Bregman has agreed to a three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox, according to a league source via The Athletic. This move marks the end of his decade-long journey with the Astros, where he evolved into a true superstar. In Boston, Bregman will reunite with his former Astros bench coach and current Red Sox manager, Alex Cora.

Bregman began the offseason as the third-highest-ranked position player on The Athletic’s Free Agent Big Board, behind only Juan Soto and Willy Adames. While Soto and Adames secured deals by early December, Bregman’s free agency stretched into February, giving the Astros and multiple teams—like the Chicago Cubs—a shot at landing the star infielder.

Tim Britton of The Athletic originally projected Bregman to land a seven-year, $189 million deal. However, he opted for a shorter-term contract with a higher average annual value (AAV), securing a three-year agreement that includes opt-outs after each season.

Drafted second overall in 2015, Bregman needed just 146 minor-league games before making his MLB debut on July 25, 2016. Over the next eight years, he became a cornerstone of Houston’s golden era and cemented his status as one of the game’s most accomplished third basemen.

Since 2017, Bregman’s first full season in the majors, only Cleveland Guardians star José Ramírez has posted a higher WAR among third basemen, according to FanGraphs. During that time, Bregman helped lead the Astros to four American League pennants, three additional appearances in the ALCS, and two World Series championships, all while anchoring their lineup and defense at third base.
