Legendary Bengali singer-songwriter Pratul Mukhopadhyay passed away on Saturday at the age of 82. He was receiving treatment for age-related health issues at Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital, where he sadly passed away in the morning.

He was widely celebrated for his timeless songs, including the iconic “Ami Banglay Gaan Gai” and “Dinga Bhasao Sagore.”

Mukhopadhyay had been grappling with health challenges for an extended period, and despite receiving medical care, his condition deteriorated in recent weeks. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had personally visited him at the hospital, and a special medical board was set up to manage his treatment. Sadly, he remained bedridden until his passing.

Born in 1942 in Barisal (now in Bangladesh), Mukhopadhyay later settled in West Bengal, where he became a pivotal figure in Bengali music and songwriting. Drawing inspiration from literature and folk traditions, his songs resonated with generations of listeners. “Ami Banglay Gaan Gai” became a cherished anthem of Bengali pride, while “Dinga Bhasao Sagore” remains a timeless favorite among music enthusiasts.

Mukhopadhyay’s love for music began at a young age, inspired by his father, a dedicated government school teacher. Over the years, he carved out a distinct place for himself in the Bengali music scene with his poetic lyrics and moving compositions. In addition to his work as a singer and lyricist, he made significant contributions to Bengali cinema as a playback singer, most famously voicing songs for Gosainbaganer Bhoot.

Despite his immense popularity, Mukhopadhyay preferred a reclusive lifestyle, staying out of the public eye. However, his legacy endures through his music, which continues to inspire and connect with listeners across generations.
