IIT Kanpur Unveils Cutting-Edge Facility to Revolutionize Data-Driven Policy Making with Census Data

IIT Kanpur is set to elevate research in socio-economic and demographic trends by offering researchers, academicians, and students direct access to crucial census data through a new partnership with the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between IIT Kanpur and the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner will establish a state-of-the-art Census Data Research Workstation at IIT Kanpur’s Computer Centre.

This new facility makes IIT Kanpur the first technology institute in Uttar Pradesh and the third central university in the state to set up such a workstation, joining institutions like Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Bundelkhand University, and DDU Gorakhpur University.

The Census Data Research Workstation offers digital access to census data spanning from 1991 to 2011, including both published tables and micro-level datasets. This invaluable resource will enable in-depth analysis, supporting research efforts that contribute to data-driven policy development and the evaluation of government programs.

Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed his excitement about the initiative, stating, “We are proud to collaborate with the Ministry of Home Affairs on this significant project. This partnership highlights IIT Kanpur’s commitment to advancing data-driven research and innovation. The Census Data Research Workstation will provide researchers and students with unparalleled access to data, empowering them to drive impactful research and inform policy decisions.”

The new workstation complements the wealth of data already accessible on the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner’s official site, which includes over 30,000 tables and more than 8,000 articles and summaries. With this initiative, IIT Kanpur strengthens its role in advancing India’s development goals through robust research and access to essential datasets.
