Larsen & Toubro Chairman S N Subrahmanyan: Companies Facing Challenges in Mobilising Labourers Due to Reluctance to Migrate

Chennai: L&T Chief S N Subrahmanyan Says Companies Struggling to Mobilise Labourers as Workers Hesitant to Migrate Due to Welfare Benefits.

Amidst backlash, including from fellow industrialists, for endorsing a 90-hour work week, Subrahmanyan highlights that the reluctance of labourers to migrate is a challenge unique to India, contrasting it with migration trends in other regions.

Subrahmanyan pointed out several factors contributing to the high attrition rate among labourers, highlighting welfare schemes such as Jan Dhan bank accounts, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) programs, the Garib Kalyan Yojana, and MGNREGA. He explained that these schemes provide significant comfort, leading many workers to prefer staying put rather than migrating for work.

Subrahmanyan remarked, “If I recruit someone from Chennai and ask them to work in Delhi, they simply say goodbye.” He highlighted that this reluctance to relocate is especially prominent in the IT sector. While emphasizing the importance of prioritizing infrastructure development in India, he noted that this challenge complicates efforts to advance the sector.
