In fact, he believes that the previous seasons were just a “rehearsal” for what’s to come, hinting at a whole new direction for the series. Speaking with Time, Mike revealed that he drew inspiration for the season’s plot from his own life and experiences. Originally, he had planned to shoot in Japan, but HBO convinced him to explore Thailand. During his visit, he fell seriously ill with bronchitis and had to be hospitalized. Despite the setback, his illness became a turning point—after two sleepless nights, Mike finally came up with the season’s plot. Usually, it takes him a long time to figure out the ending of his stories, but this time, his condition helped him finalize it much earlier than expected.
