30 Injured in Stampede at Maha Kumbh, Akharas Skip Holy Dip

Maha Kumbh
Prayagraj: Rescue operation underway after a stampede occurred on ‘Mauni Amavasya’ during the ongoing ‘Maha Kumbh Mela’ festival, in Prayagraj, Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025. Several casualties have allegedly been reported during the stampede.

A stampede-like chaos erupted at the Maha Kumbh on the morning of Mauni Amavasya, leaving around 30 women injured. The intense crowd surge led the Akharas to make the difficult decision to cancel the sacred holy dip for safety reasons.

As millions of devotees flocked to the tent city in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for the highly anticipated ‘Amrit Snan’, chaos erupted about a kilometer from the sacred Sangam. The growing crowd overwhelmed the area, causing barricades to break and triggering a stampede-like panic. Several women fainted in the commotion, and as they collapsed, the situation intensified. Emergency response teams quickly rushed the unconscious women to the on-site hospital within the Maha Kumbh grounds. Meanwhile, those with more serious injuries were transferred to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College for further treatment.

To ensure the safety and well-being of devotees at the Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh government has deployed over 1,000 medical professionals throughout the fair grounds. Along with facilities for both minor and major surgeries in each sector, 300 specialist doctors are stationed at a super-specialty hospital in Mahakumbh Nagar, ready to respond to any emergency.

The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya is the most sacred ritual of the Maha Kumbh, and this year, it holds even greater spiritual significance. The occasion coincides with a rare celestial event, the ‘Triveni Yog,’ which occurs only once every 144 years, adding a profound sense of rarity and reverence to the holy dip.

In line with the time-honored traditions of the Kumbh Mela, Akharas from the three sects—’Sanyasi’, ‘Bairagi’, and ‘Udaseen’—partake in the sacred dip in a carefully timed sequence. This solemn ritual is preceded by a grand and mesmerizing procession that winds its way to the Sangam Ghat, adding a sense of grandeur and spiritual awe to the occasion.
