A devastating stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening has claimed at least 18 lives. In response, the Railway Ministry has announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Victims suffering grievous injuries will receive ₹2.5 lakh, while those with minor injuries will be granted ₹1 lakh. Meanwhile, Delhi Police have released an official list of the deceased.
Fire Department’s Response: Four Fire Tenders Dispatched, Injured Rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital
Fire officials reported that four fire tenders were deployed on Saturday night after receiving distress calls about a stampede on platforms 14 and 15 at around 9:55 PM. The injured were immediately taken to Lok Nayak Hospital, where a senior official confirmed to The Indian Express that 15 people had tragically lost their lives.
Railways on Stampede: Sudden Passenger Surge Led to Panic, Situation Now Under Control
In an official statement, the Railways explained that an “unprecedented rush” near platforms 13 and 14 triggered chaos when some passengers fainted, sparking rumors of a stampede and causing panic. Officials later managed to ease the congestion and restore order.
DCP (Railways) KPS Malhotra further elaborated that the presence of the Prayagraj Express at platform 14 led to massive crowds, compounded by passengers of the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani waiting on platforms 12, 13, and 14 due to train delays. He revealed that approximately 1,500 general tickets had been sold, making crowd control extremely challenging.
